Five Survive
Holly Jackson
Young Adult Novel
Standalone
Our review: A Spring Break RV road trip goes horribly awry as a group of friends tries to survive a sniper attack in the middle of nowhere. Secrets abound.
The written prose didn’t excite me. It was fairly dependable and I feel geared towards the younger YA audience.
Entertaining YA Novel.
The Cruel Prince
Holly Black
Young Adult Novel
Series 1/3
Our review: A faerie fantasy centres around Jude and her sisters who have to adjust from their upbringing as humans to the fae world after their parents die.
This story bounds along with compelling characters and a thrilling tale of fae and magic.
The writing is excellent and is considerate of YA level.
Ideal for 12-15 year old girls.
The Mountain Of Souls
Marcus Lee
Young Adult / Fantasy Novel
Series 1/3
Our review: A ‘chosen one’ style story of survival. Malina, a slave, is forced into a protective order trained to protect the king. A brutal existence begins with magic, action and romance.
The writing is spot on and fine for YA or adults. Characters are sound and the first person narrative illuminates the heroine.
Ideal for older YA readers and young at heart adults.
Would make a good TV series.
Quest For A Maid
Frances Mary Hendry
Young Adult / Historical Novel
Standalone
Our review: A gutsy teenage girl and her freinds take on authority and witchcraft using only their wits to save the day. Meg, an ordinary teenage girl is sent away to become the companion of a young princess little realising she is all that stands between the little girl’s life and the threat from Meg’s own sister a witch hired to eliminate the girl.
Excellently written YA fantasy that has super characters and a raw realism reflective of the historical era it’s set in.
4.5 stars for a fantastic YA fantasy
